Projects

Every maker has his or her “backburner” projects, that sometimes need the right customer to get launched. These are mine:

-   A five- or six-string violone after a small double bass by Gasparo that I was introduced to a few years ago. Without the 19th century accretions the entirely original body will nicely accommodate a gamba like neck. For such a small instrument the sound is surprisingly deep and singing. In my opinion this will make a spectacular early violone, with real ‘contrabasso’ lower strings. An interesting variation too on the usual Maggini theme.

-   A copy of an early Amati violin, especially for the early repertoire with bare gut stringing throughout, in order to catch the silvery, penetrating tone so often mentioned in this connection. I tried it on my normal model, varnished already, but a completely new bridge design was needed. Even then I had preferred to be able to adapt the graduations, at least of the back, to this situation; better still to start with a model specifically conceived for the job.
