About the workshop

To give an impression of what’s going on here:

-   most of the time and energy is spent on making baroque and classical string instruments;

-   up to now I worked mainly on my own;

-   I am not a dealer, though I have instruments for sale or for hire occasionally;

-   this is not a violin shop that you can walk into, with an extensive stock of accessories;

-   you are welcome, but on appointment only;

-   restoration work is accepted to the point that it doesn’t interfere too seriously with the making of new instruments.

To the best of my knowledge I use traditional and historically correct materials (wood, glue, pigments, varnish etc.) and methods, with a strong bias towards classical Italy. Each instrument is built individually, without the use of pre-machined parts. Though I use patina to enliven the often appalling blandness of a new instrument, I do not try to imitate age, with scratches, worn patches etc. It is you who has to do the ageing job. My varnish wears off elegantly and will eventually reveal a pleasantly contrasting ground.
